2011年通訳案内士試験分析と攻略法
2011年の通訳案内士試験の問題は、一見簡単そうに見えて難しい問題が多く、英検準1級・TOEIC750点ぐらいの人なら60点手前、英検1級・TOEIC920点ぐらいの人なら70点以上は、対策勉強しなくても取れる問題と言えます。合格予想点は65点ぐらいなので、合格するには英検1級A落ち・TOEIC860点以上の「英語基礎体力」が欲しいものです。それでは今度は個別に問題を見ていくことにしましょう。
まず1番の英文和訳問題は14点満点で、1番の問題がやや難しく、General MacArthur, head of the American occupying forces, did manage to get Japanese women the vote in 1946 when the Americans were running things after Japan’s defeat in World War ��.の下線部がうまく訳せなかった人が多いようです。manageの意味は、succeed in doing something difficult, especially after trying very hardで、run things意味は「取り仕切る」ですが、後者は文脈から次のように約すことができます。「アメリカ占領軍の最高司令官であったマッカーサー元帥は、日本の第二次大戦敗戦後にアメリカ人が日本の国政を仕切っていた時に、何とか日本女性に参政権を与えることができたのであった。」didの強調形はこのようにドラマチックに述べることによって表現することができます。この問題ではそれらの訳出の失敗で、減点3点となった人が多いようですが、何とか減点を2点以内抑えたいものです。
2番の和訳問題は簡単で、正解は「世界の先進国の中で、日本ほど国会に女性の議員のしめる割合少ない国はない。」となります。これは間違った人は非常に少ないようです。
次に大問2番の事物の英語説明の問題では、16点満点でなかなか難しく、半分ぐらいしか得点できない人が多いようですが、何とかトレーニングによって最低10点以上は取って欲しいものです。まず解答を書くスペースの量から考えて、最低40語以上70語以内で書くことが望ましく、作り方のコツは外国人が聞きたい情報(1番の問題の場合は、いつでも、どの電車でもあるのか。いつからどうして始まったのかなど)を想定して、５W1Hを踏まえて書くことです。すると1番の解答は次のようになります。
This is a train car reserved for female passengers to protect them from molestation. Women-only train cars were introduced in Japan in 2000 in response to complaints about drunken men groping women in trains. Nowadays they are usually available in most trains during the rush hours on weekdays. (and even all day long on weekends in trains in JR West.) (48語)
まず、何かを短く定義します。するとa train car reserved for female passengersとなります。この時、reserved forが出なければ、only for, exclusively for womenでもかまいません。
次に、目的を書くと、to protect women from molestationかprotect women from men’s gropingですが、このマイケルジャクソンの記事で何度も使われた”molestation (痴漢行為)”や”groping”が出てこなかった人は、protect women from men’s dirty touchingとかso that women can avoid men’s dirty touchingと作るしかないですが、それぐらいの語彙は使いこなせるようになりましょう。
次に、「いつ」、「どこで」を加えていきます。するとduring the rush hours on weekdaysやin Japanとなりますが、この車両の由来に触れながら、現状について述べるのがポイントです、これによって変遷がわかり(chronological description)、格調高い内容になります。また、available(利用できる)がすぐ浮かぶかどうかもポイントです。

Groping on public transportation is an international problem, but Japanese railway companies have found an effective way to stop it by introducing women-only train and subway cars.
It’s a known fact that Tokyo is overcrowded and that is most obvious during rush hour, when professional pushers shove people into train cars so the doors can close properly. Unfortunately this is the kind of environment where perverts thrive. Usually most people mind their own business, reading a magazine, checking their email or talking on the phone, but some men prefer to talk dirty to the women next to them and groping them. This kind of molestation or “chikan” as the Japanese call it, happens every day in Japanese major cities, and lost of women choose to be quiet and bear it, because of the way male-dominated Japanese society functions. But ever since Japanese railway stations introduced the women-only train cars, they don’t have to, anymore.
With groping being so popular, the first female-only cars were apparently first introduced in 1912 on the present Chuo Mine Line to prevent men from Looking at the beautiful faces of young female students, but it was discontinued in 1973. Modern-day women-only train cars were introduced in December 2000 in response to complaints about drunk men groping women during the “bonekai”party season. It proved effective to some extent and other companies followed the example introducing their own special cars. Some operate throughout the day, some just during rush hour and are generally found on rapid service trains with longer distance between stops. Unfortunately, not all women fit in the crowded train car during busy intervals, and some have to ride in the normal ones, where the threat of groping still looms. Apparently the best way to handle a groping situation is to grab the pervert’s wrist, jerk his hand and scream “chikan” since this kind of embarrassment tactic is very effective in Japanese society. However, gropers know most Japanese women are too ashamed to react in public. Small children, senior citizens and men with disabilities are the only ones allowed on the women-only cars.
Thousands of Japanese men are arrested on groping charges every year, and in recent years, those who have falsely been accused and those who are afraid of being charged with molestation have requested men-only train cars be introduced in the spirit of gender equality.
After they were introduced in Japan, countries like Indonesia, India and Philippines introduced their own female-only train cars.
2番の「こいのぼり」を説明する問題も難しかった人が多く、この問題も半分ぐらいしか得点できていない人が多いようです。1番の問題と同様に、作り方のコツは外国人が聞きたい情報(いつどこで見られるのか。いつからどのようにして始まったのかなど)を想定して、５W1Hを踏まえて書くことです。すると解答は次のようになります。

よくstreamerが使われていますが、これは a long narrow piece of colored paper used to decorate a place for a party or other celebrationのことで、しいて言えば一番上の「吹流し」に当たりますが、その下の三体の鯉のぼりとはかなり違います。”carp streamer”と言えば、「鯉のぼり」を見たことが無いネイティブはそれをイメージできないでしょうが、実際に見せた後なら、略してcarp streamerと言うのが便利でしょう。それから、windsock(風見用円錐筒)も使われていますが、これはa tube made of soft material, open at both ends at the top of a pole, to show the direction of the windとなっており、風の方向を示すわけではないのでこれも違います。また、carp-shapedとしているのもありますが、実際の鯉の形とは程遠いのでこれも間違いです。よって、外国人の質問を想定してみると次のようになります。
What：several pieces of cylindrical cloth painted with pictures of carp flown~（鯉の絵が描かれた円柱状の布）
Who：Japanese families with boys（誰が上げる?）
When：around Children’s Day(May 5) (いつ頃?)

さて、次の大問3番と4番の読解問題はそれぞれ20点満点で、比較的簡単なようですが、それでも各6点ぐらいづつミスをし、それぞれが7割の14点ぐらいの人が多いようです。しかし、和文英訳や日本事物英訳の苦手な人は、8割ぐらいゲットして挽回して欲しいものです。
大問3の正解は、
問1 stone walls 問2 (a) (2) from (b) (1) vicinity 問3 城下町 問4 身分の高い武士は最も城に近い区域に住んでいた 問5 (��)円形、五角形 (��)常緑樹、城攻め[籠城] (��)鍛冶屋
ですが、やや難しい問題は、問2 (b)と問4と問5の(��)でしょう。
vicinity(近辺：in the immediate vicinity of〜で「すぐ近くに」)は準1級7000語レベルの語彙で、時事英語でよく使われますが、このレベルの語彙はアクエアリーズの「英検1級基礎語彙(5000語-8000語水準)」の語彙テキストでボキャビルしておけば対処できます。問4のthe higher ranked being closest to the castleは、2つの省略を見抜いて解かなければならない難問です。１つ目はrankedとの後の samuraiとわかりやすいですが、2つ目は、chief vassals lived within, the samurai lived in, the merchants ~ lived inとなっている前後の文脈から、下線部のbeingはlivedと見抜き、quarters(地区、区域)を補って訳す必要がある点です。問5の(��)と(��)は間違った人が多く、前者は”in a time of siege”の部分の和訳ですが、siegeは敵に包囲されることで、敵を主体にすれば「城攻め」、自分を主体にすれば「籠城」という訳になります。後者は漢字が書けなくて間違った人が多いようですが、通訳案内士試験にパスするには漢字の知識も要るのでブラッシュアップしておきましょう。
大問４の正解は、
問1 (A) (エ) (B) (イ) (C) (エ) (D) (ア) 問2 エアキイカオアウ 問3 調理や加工の手法をやたら用いるのは品が無く、素材が本来持つ自然の味を保ち、自然にできるだけ近い状態で食べるべきであると言う考え方(64語) すしは、近世以前の日本にあった魚肉を発酵させる文化から来ており、今日、我々がすしと認識しているものとは著しく異なっている。
ですが、やや難しい問題は問2の並べ替え問題と問3でしょう。
前者は、(as a, be cooked, with, last, lose freshness, shoyu or miso, such flavorings as, they, would)の並べ替えで、
この問題を解くには、onlyは「倒置構文」を作ること、as a last resort(最後の手段として)という表現、such A as Bの構文の３つの知識が必要です。”Only when fish lose freshness would they be cooked with such flavoring as shoyu and miso as a last resort.” この倒置構文のパターンは、大学入試では偏差値67点ぐらいの文法項目で、TOEICでは800点レベル以上の問題としてよく出されるものです。アクエアリーズの「スーパーパーフェクト英文法」でもカバーしている必須文法事項で、Only three years later did I realize that I was wrong.のように使います。such A as Bは偏差値57点ぐらいで、TOEIC 600点ぐらいのレベルの問題として出題されます。こういった文法が弱い人は、TOEICでAランク(860点)を目指す対策勉強を通じて英文法をしっかりと身につけ、通訳案内士試験に備えましょう。
問3は、“the extensive use of cookery and processing methods is vulgar; the natural initial flavors of ingredients should be retained and eaten in the form as close as possible to nature.”の部分の和訳が答えになりますが、太字のextensive(幅広い), process(加工する、処理する), vulgar(下品な、低俗な)といった準1級レベルで、TOEICでも頻出の「6千語水準」の語彙の意味がわかる必要があります。通訳案内士試験対策は、一般語彙面では、準1級試験対策、TOEIC860点突破対策と共通点が多いので、なかなか案内士試験にパスしない人は、是非、それら同時対策によって「英語基礎体力」を強化することが合格への最短距離です。
次に日本事物英訳問題ですが、これも簡単そうに見えて難しく、TOEIC 900点突破した人でも、14点満中6割ぐらいしか取れないケースが多いようです。しかし、ここはしっかりと対策勉強をして、7割の10点はゲットして欲しいものです。解答は次の通りです。
(1) (賃貸の)マンション：apartment, flat（両方OKですが前者のほうがわかりやすい）
(2) 貸し切りバス：chartered bus（どうしても出でこなければ、bus hired[rented] by someone for their own useということもできるが、苦しいので覚えた方が絶対にいい）
(3) 霊柩車：hearse, funeral car（hearseが出てこなければfuneral carでもいい）
(4) 太陰暦：lunar calendar（スペルを間違わないように！）
(5) 忘年会：year-end party（forget-the-year partyと言えば日本文化をより反映していると言えるが、year-end partyのわかりやすいので無難）
(6) 総選挙：general election（これは暗記もので、electionのフレーズ、gubernatorial election(知事選)、mayoral election(市長選)とgeneralのフレーズ、general anesthesia[anesthetic](全身麻酔)も覚えておこう）
(7) 漆器：lacquerware, lacquer ware, lacquer work, japan（言い方は多いがこの順に多く用いられる）
(8) 電子レンジ：microwave oven, kitchen microwave, microwave（microwaveだけで、「電子レンジ」の意味があるが、他に「極超短波」の意味もあるので、文脈なしで言う場合は、microwave oven[kitchen microwave]の方がわかりやすい）
(9) (駅)のホーム：station platform, train platform, railway platform, platform（これも同様に、platformでも「駅のホーム」の意味があるが、演壇、綱領の他20個近い意味があるので、文脈無しで言う場合は、
station[train, railway] platformと言う方がわかりやすい）
(10) キュウリ：cucumber（これは簡単すぎる。今後出そうなもう少し難しそうなものは、
竹の子(bamboo shoot)、栗(chestnut)、小豆(red bean)、柿(persimmon)、びわ(loquat)、いちじく(fig)、大根(Japanese radish)、わさび(Japanese horse radish)、ナス(eggplant)、ごぼう(burdock)、梅(Japanese apricot[plum])、もやし(bean sprout)、梨(Japanese pear)、ピーマン(green pepper)、かぶら(turnip)、れんこん(lotus root)などがあります）
(11) 原子力発電所：nuclear power plant, atomic power plant, atomic power station, nuclear power station（たくさん言い方がありますが、plantの方がstationより多く使われています）
(12) 建国記念日：National Foundation Day
(13) 就職活動：job hunting, job search
(14) お通し：hors d’oeuvre[appetizer] served at bars
最後の和文英訳問題は1問8点の16点満点で、配点が大きく何としても7割の11点は取りたいものです。しかし、1問目は比較的簡単ですが、2問目はいくつかの関門をクリアしなければなりません。
1番の「日本人やフランス人は、旅行は余裕があるときに行う趣味ととらえているものが多いが、韓国人の多くは、旅行は生活をしていくにあたってなくてはならないもの、と考えているらしい。」は、
While many Japanese and French consider traveling as a hobby they enjoy when they can afford to, South Koreans seem to consider it as an integral part of their lives.
となりますが、下線部がやや難しかったでしょうか。まず「対比」を表すwhileで始め、「韓国人」の訳出に注意し、「なくてはならないもの」はよく使われる表現、”an integral[essential, indispensable] part of one’s life”を使って訳出します。この問題は何とか2点マイナスぐらいで乗り越えてもらいたいものです。それでは次の問題です。
「日本」は日本語で「にほん」とも「にっぽん」とも言い、どちらも正しい。しかし考えてみると、国家の名前の正式な読み方が決まっていないというのは、日本人以外の人には奇妙に思えるかもしれない。日本政府も、どちらでもよい、としている。
この問題もやや難問で、最後の文が浮いていると思いませんか。すっきりと整理して論理明快な英語に訳すと次のようになります。
“Japan” is pronounced “Nihon” and “Nippon” in Japanese, both of which have been accepted in Japanese society and by the Japanese government. However, it may seem odd to non-Japanese that a single official pronunciation for the name doesn’t exist in Japan.
「どちらも正しい」を直訳して、”both pronunciations are correct”としても、フィーリング的でわかりにくいので、論理のフィルターにかけると、”socially acceptable”のことなので、have been (widely) accepted in Japanese societyとします。そしてその時に、「日本政府も、どちらでもよい、としている。」のような会話の引用のような文の英訳を試訳のように挿入するとすっきりするでしょう。「しかし考えてみると」は忠実に訳せば、”Come to think of it,”ですが、文脈から、However, it may seemの中に含まれるので省けます。最も、Come to think of it, it may strike non-Japanese odd that 〜ならいいですが。最後に「国家の名前の正式な読み方が決まっていない」は、「１つの正式な国の読み方がない」と考えて訳出します。
さて皆さん、今回の通訳案内士試験はいかがでしたか。本当にいい試験でしたね。私は何が悲しいと言って、このすばらしい英文試験が免除になったために、まだまだ荒削りの英検1級レベルの人が、英文試験対策勉強通じてのスキルUPのチャンスを失うことです。ですから私は、できるだけ英検1級合格者に、もったいないから英文試験免除を使わずに受験するように忠告しており、スタッフは絶対に免除を使うのは御法度にしています。さて皆さん、問題分析と攻略法はお役に立てたでしょうか。今回65点が取れそうもない人は、私の助言を参考に勉強に励んでスキルUPし、再チャレンジしましょう！それでは明日に向かって英悟の道を
